Scenography and Costume Design in the Greek National Opera 1944-1974. Thirty Years of History and Opsis.
Summary:
The doctoral thesis presents, explores and thoroughly analyses the scenography and costume design of all the productions of the Greek National Opera from 1944 to 1974. It also addresses a broad range of issues stemming from the main subject concerning the history and operation of the institution as well as the overall development of scenography in Greece during the 20th century.
The first chapter, titled "Historical Context", extensively looks at the historical facts concerning the Greek National Opera during the period under study and thoroughly describes the persistent efforts to create, organize and establish an official body dedicated to lyrical theatre in Greece, against considerable hardship. The second chapter, titled "Aesthetic Context", analyses the function of scenography and costume design in prose and lyrical theatre, before describing the wider aesthetic context and framework (including the buildings hosting the productions) within which the artists were called to submit and implement their proposals regarding both scenography and costume design.
The third chapter, titled "The Artists", comprises the main body of the thesis, which is specifically dedicated to the oeuvre of the 28 scenographers and costume designers who worked with the Greek National Opera from 1944 to 1974. This chapter presents the artists' personalities, their artistic aspirations and the works finally commissioned to them, regarding the original creative proposals and their actual implementation as well as the reception of the works from the Press. To better clarify and optimally bring out the artists' intentions and the way these intentions materialised on scene, the chapter is further supported by extensive visual material (models, sketches and photos of the productions), the greatest part of which is published for the very first time, along with a fully-documented list of reviews.
The last chapter of the thesis draws conclusions and summarises the information presented in previous chapters, so as to: a) compose a timeline for the development of scenography and costume design in the Greek National Opera over the thirty-year period under study; b) showcase individual issues of interest emerging during this period, and c) discuss the author's own views as they were shaped in the course of research. To complement the doctoral thesis, a detailed list of the productions staged during the period under study is also provided.
