Terminology: Application of Frame Semantics to the thematic field of Finance for the creation of a term base, from a Translation perspective
Summary:
This Master's Thesis was written for the needs of the Postgraduate Studies Programme Translation and Interpreting of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Its focus and aim is the creation of a parallel terminological resource in Greek and English language, containing the terminology of the finance sector. This terminological resource will be based on Fillmore's Frame Semantics (Fillmore, 1977, 1982, 1985) and will follow the example of FrameNet (Baker et al., 1998).

Particularly, the first objective is the creation of semantic frames for this language for specific purposes, which includes scenes that have not been used in the semantic frames of the language for general purposes. The aim is to use these frames in two languages and the ultimate purpose is the alignment of the concepts through the frames in a way that will facilitate translating. Specifically, we are going to check, firstly, if the semantic frames that are to be created for the Greek language can be used for a second language as well, in this case the English language, and, secondly, whether the terminological resource that is going to be created can be utilised by Natural Language Processing for the facilitation of translation procedure.

To achieve this, a special purpose corpus was designed, divided into two sub-corpora ‒ one for Greek and one for English. The sources from which the corpus data was gathered are, firstly, financial news reports and, secondly, banks' financial reports. Then, the finance terms were extracted from the corpus. After that, the Greek terms were put into semantic frames. Initially, semantic frames which had already been created for the semantic resource FrameNet were used. In cases where this was not possible, mainly when it was about terms that do not belong to the language for general purposes, new frames were created. Finally, the same procedure was repeated for the English terms, this time using the Greek frames created.

The result of the Thesis is a terminological resource consisting of three parts: (a) a number of semantic frames for the semantic field of financing; (b) a bilingual lexical resource in electronic format which contains lexical units in Greek and English. The lexical units comprise the special vocabulary of the thematic field of this research and they are described both in their semantic frames and through the listing of the lexical relations with which they are linked to each other, and (c) a fully annotated corpus, composed of the sentences-examples in which the lexical units of the frames can be found.

As far as the answer to the first research question is concerned, it has been proven that it is possible to use the semantic frames created for the Greek language also in English, rendering the frames cross-lingual. This means that different societies can be aware of the same types of events that the frames describe. The final result of the thesis is the alignment of the lexical units, through which the concepts of the thematic field are expressed. Moreover, regarding the second research question, this terminological resource is in a form ready for use and the terminological data base created can be utilised to facilitate translating
