The evolutionary course of the kanun through a historical bibliographical approach in the context of the nation-states of Hellas and Turkey and the politics of music under the prism of Turkism in the case of Turkey
Summary:
The author’s personal involvement with the kanun from 1999 and onwards gave rise to research of the historical facts that related to the evolutionary course of the instrument. This paper presents a synopsis of the literature on this subject as far as that concerns relative Hellenic and Turkish publications. Later on our study was further supplemented by various international musicological publications. The above aspects of our study stand as the first pillar of our paper.
Researching this subject, something unexpected came up: in both instances –Hellenic and Turkish publications– a differentiated projection of the same historical facts and eras was found in regard to the presence and evolution of the instrument. After this finding, the initial objectives of our essay were redefined, as what came to the forefront of our research was the study and role of the nation-state in the pursuit of specific political and ideological goals that constituted an imperceptible framework within which many of the afore mentioned publications were made. Due to the subject of our study we focused on the politics of music that the Turkish nation-state followed under the prism of Turkism, as expressed by the Turkish sociologist Ziya Gökalp. This constitutes the second pillar of our essay.
A critical look at the emerging facts and their study, brought to the surface issues related to the approach and management of matters of the past and the politics of music, occasioned by the use of musical instruments –like the kanun– as ‘symbols’ and as ‘instruments of political agendas’. All of the above offer for the first time such a substantiated picture of the wider region of the Eastern Mediterranean, whilst the study of the ideological context clearly reveals the role and the directions that ‘ideology’ and ‘political agendas’ of a centralised power define in a nation-state like Turkey.
