Production, Use and Techno-Economical Study of Household Fermentable Waste, Separated In Source
Summary:
A contemporary and simultaneously complicated problem that the urban societies face nowadays is the management of the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and more specifically of the biodegradable fraction of the MSW. The biodegradable fraction of the MSW is the least managed and utilized waste fraction. Moreover, the biodegradable waste if managed properly, could potentially become an important source of financial benefits for the local community.
It is both a European and a national strategy in Greece to develop and implement innovative and efficient methods of management based on the principles of the waste management hierarchy pyramid. Within the framework of the European project Waste4think (HORIZON 2020), an alternative kitchen waste management system is being developed and optimized in the Municipality of Halandri.
The management framework consists of the source-separated waste collection of the kitchen waste, which in turn is fed into a pilot-scale dryer/shredder, which is located within the municipality boundaries. Furthermore, in collaboration with the National Technical University of Athens, experiments are being carried out aiming to develop a holistic approach for the valorization of the produced biomass product, which is named FORBI (food residue biomass).
The scope of this diploma thesis is to present and analyze the characteristics of this kitchen waste management framework, which is being implemented in the Municipality of Halandri in pilot-scale. Furthermore, an economic analysis of the scheme is carried out.
