The prehistoric lithic assemblage from Kanali of Thesprotia
Summary:
The present work entitled «The prehistoric lithic assemblage from Kanali of Thesprotia» was undertaken in the framework of my postgraduate studies at the Department of History and Archeology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens during the period 2014-2017. Its purpose is the study of the prehistoric collection of chipped stone artifacts from Kanali in Thesprotia. The study was conducted during the summer months of 2016 and 2017 at the School of Gardiki to catalogue the material that came to light during the Intensive Survey in the Middle Kalamas Valley.
The dissertation is structured in three parts. The first part presents the history of the research program "Archaeological Survey on the Basin of Kalamas Thesprotia", which took place in this area. Secondly, there is a detailed presentation of the excavation at the site Kanali. Finally, the goals and methodology are analyzed. The second part, which is also the main part of the thesis, focuses on the presentation of the artifacts under study. Particularly, the spatial distribution and the petrographic analysis of the raw materials with which the lithics were constructed, are analytically mentioned. Next, a detailed description of the operational sequence by raw material is provided. The second part ends with the typology and the tool types which are defined during this study. The third part of the dissertation is the synthesis of the data obtained from the research, which are also examined in comparison with other sites of Neolithic Epirus and Western Greece in general. Therefore, an effort is made to draw conclusions and identify relevant parallels with these areas, with ultimate goal the reconstitution and enrichment of our existing picture for Neolithic Epirus. Finally, follow the conclusions, the figures, the tables with the finds and the bibliography.
