Assesing the intensity of anxiety and depression experienced by children of an island region
Summary:
Introduction: Anxiety and depression are two of the most common psychiatric disorders. It was previously believed that children-adolescents do not suffer from anxiety and depression but nowadays this notion is regarded as outdated. It has been found that about 11% of children and adolescents have experienced depression-like symptoms before the age of 18 years.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to measure the intensity of anxiety and depression in children and adolescents aged 10-15 years old habitants of island region.
Material and methods: The study sample consisted of 300 healthy children and teens aged 10-15 who lived on the island of Tinos. The STAIC scale was used to measure stress as a permanent state of being and the CDI scale for depression. The entire statistical analysis of the data was performed using the SPSS version 22 statistical package. The significance level 5% (p=0,05%)was considered statistically significant. T-test, anova test are the statistical tests that were used to analyze the data.
Results: Of the 300 children of the sample 50.3% were boys, 35% were 10-11 years old, 40.3% were 12-13 years old and 24.7% were 14-15 years old. The 35, 7% of the sample report their school performance from poor to medium and 93.0% engage in extracurricular activities. 6.7% of participants say they have been diagnosed with a health problem themselves and 5.7% another family member. 86% live with both parents. The majority of the sample characterizes his parents as being meek.
Statistically significant results were found to be anxiety intensity with girls superiority p <0.001. As for extracurricular activities of children it was found that children who are not involved with any extracurricular activity experience a higher stress level p <0.001 as well as depression, p = 0.00. When a person in the family has been diagnosed with a health problem, children experience higher stress levels p <0.001 and depression p = 0.005. High scores on the CDI scale but within the normal range are found in children living with one parent (single-parent families) p = 0.004.
Conclusion: In the present study, it was found that children of an island region have experienced levels of anxiety and depression within the normal range. The intensity of anxiety and depression fluctuates in the presence of a variety of socio-demographic factors.
