The annexes at the early byzantine basilicas of Peloponnesus (6th – 7th c.). Architecture and function
Summary:
The present essay is an attempt at a synthetic approach to the study of the early byzantine basilicas and their annexes in Peloponnesus, which were built and altered during the 6th and 7th century. The main aim of the essay is to clarify the architectural form and function of the basilicas, as well as the annexes.
The project consists of three chapters. The first one deals with the historical context of the 6th and 7th century and presents the most important events which occurred in Greece and particularly in the region of Peloponnesus.
The second chapter, which is divided into two parts, presents a short review of the origin of the basilica, its function at the early Christian ecclesiastical architecture and some general information about the annexes.
The first part is about the prothesis, diaconicon and pastoforia, as special annexes at the long sides of basilicas. There is a reference to the history of research about them, a presentation of their architectural form and function and the theories about their position and interpretation.
In the second part, there is a presentation of the annex of baptistery and its history of research. There is also a short review of the ceremony of baptism during the early byzantine era and the reasons of its abolition as a special annex at the end of 6th c. In addition, the typology of the architectural form of the baptistery and baptismal font, as well, complete the end of the chapter.
In the third chapter, there is a catalogue of the early byzantine basilicas and their annexes in the region of Peloponnesus.
Based on the data mentioned above, there is a comparison between the basilicas and the annexes, in order to draw some useful conclusions about the similarities and differences, and the role they played in time and place, as well as the causes and influences that were serviced during the 6th and 7th century.
