Academic and Administrative Structure and Operation of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) : Research and Critical View

The present paper deals with the academic, administrative structure and operation of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). It is the Higher Educational Institution inextricably linked to the engineer’s studies in Greece as well as to the technological production with remarkable social contributions and international appeal. NTUA was the most prominent place of origin of the engineers who dealt with the construction of major technical projects and the industrial identity of Greece. More specifically, in this paper there is a brief historical review from the establishment of the NTUA. until today, presentation of the central administration bodies with their competencies, presentation of the Schools and the Departments and of their respective bodies, as well as presentation of the other academic - educational structures of the Technical University, with their administrative organization and competences. Through the extensive study of the national legislation, the existing regulations, the decisions of its collective bodies and the various evaluation reports, information was collected related on NTUA efforts to reform its organizational structure that finally shaped its current situation. Today, NTUA is in a transitional period of application of law number 4485/2017 and at the same time continues to make efforts to be adapted to the present requirements of the higher education systems and the society. NTUA is a leader in the development of all the engineering sciences in Greece and emphasizes specially at the research that is carried out in the large number of its laboratories, which not only forms the integral part of the providing education but also supports its internationalization.
