The perception and organization of sensory input for preschool children with Autism
Summary:
Overview: Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) lack the ability to filter sensory information found in their environment and to respond appropriately. Sensory disorders faced by these individuals relate to multi-sensory function as well as emotional and social function ability.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate and evaluate the sensory disorders which affect the daily routine of children with autism.
Methodology: The sample used for this study consists of 151 children (76 with typical growth and 75 with ASD), who were placed in special treatment centers. The data collection was done by filling a questionnaire “Sensory Profile Caregiver Questionnaire by parents and statistical analysis was done with the statistical Kruskal-Wallis test, Mann-Whitney and Spearman’s rho. Statistical significance was set at p<0,05.
Results: A comparison of standard and children with ASD is observed that children with ASD have statistically significantly lower scores in all aspects associated with the typical children (p <0.001), except for the factor "low resistance" where the scores between the two groups are equal (p = 0.104). The statistical analysis also found that different socioeconomic and clinical factors negatively affecting the total score of the scale “Sensory Profile Caregiver Questionnaire” for children with ASD, such as concomitant health problems, gestational age, family income, (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Children with ASD have statistically significantly lower scores on all factors of scale “Sensory Profile Caregiver Questionnaire” compared to typical development children and overall rating is influenced by both social and clinical factors.
