Summary:
ABSTRACT

The following assignment studies the design and the content of ancient Greek drama curricula, published and applied in Greek Secondary General Education in the interval after the restoration of Greek Democracy (1974) and until the beginning of the Millennium.
It faces them as the impact of the interplay between the educational politics in ancient drama of the Department of Classical Philology and the newly founded Department of Theatre Studies in the Philosophical School of The National and Kapodestrian University of Athens.
Therefore it ascribes the formality in methodology and the conservative didactic approach of ancient drama to the persistence of Classical Philology to understand it as a mean of linguistic competence, through which the traditional values of the Greek Nation are preserved and inherited to the future generations. It connects on the other hand, the influence of Theatre Studies Department ιn the perspective ancient drama has already been taught in the Greek Secondary General Education, with a renewed academic conception, that focuses on its textual body not merely as “logos” but as well as a performance willing to be “incarnated” on stage.
Such assumptions are rarely encountered in the total sum of the curricula mentioned above, partly due to the strong influence Classic Philology attracts in educational Greek policy on ancient drama but first and foremost because the short-aged Theatre Studies Department cannot impose its academic values upon Greek Secondary General Education yet, thus surpassing the strength of the Classical Department in the development of the Greek educational policy.
After a decade of its foundation and function, Theatre Studies Department can only influence basically the curriculum published in 1999 and henceforth applied in the third class of the Greek Gymnasium; that innovative curriculum studies ancient drama as a complex hybrid of different arts and interprets the textual function of ancient Greek tragedy and comedy along with their theatrical performance.
