teenagers' perceptions of the neighborhood they live in : individual, family environmental factors
Summary:
Many researches focuse on the relationship between neighborhood disability and emotional problems as well as on the behavioral problems of young people. It was therefore reasonable to further explore the relationship that the neighnborhood seems to have with the well-being of young people. In an ecosystem context, an attempt was made to explore the relationship between the teenage perceptions of the neighborhood living in a region of northern and western suburbs of Athens, as well as their expectations for their future and their prosocial behavior. This model also counted the influence of the parenting style and the support framework on the neighborhood (friends). The information was collected from the representative sample of 274 adolescents from 14 to 19 years of age. Girls feel more secure in the neighborhood, tend to declare a larger supportive frame than boys when they talk about how they are brought up they refer to a supporting parent as opposed to the boys referring to an authoritarian parent. The teenagers living in the northern suburbs reported a greater bond with the neighborhood. As far as the prosocial behavior is concerned, the more supportive the parent is, the more he pushes the adolescent to behave in a prosocial way. Finally, the more opportunities for activities the teenagers perceive in the area they live in and the more satisfied they are from it, the more close relationships they seem to create with peers.
