Interventianal stress management program in patients with multiple sclerosis
Summary:
Introduction: Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune demyelinating disease of CNS, whose causes are not yet clear. It is probably a combination of environmental, genetic and epigenetic factors. According to epidemiological data, the disease usually occurs at early age (20-30 years) and is more common in women. The investigation of the relationship between stress and MS has begun since the time of Jean Martin Charcot and continues with contemporary literature to highlight the role of stress in relation to the likelihood of a first onset and relapse of the disease. Stress has also interaction with other variables of daily symptoms such as physical activity, depression and anxiety symptoms. Method: In this quasi-experimental study 61 MS patients were allocated to receive either a novel cognitive behavioral stress management technique called Pythagorean Self-Awareness Intervention for 8 weeks or usual care. Questionnaires were used to evaluate patients at the beginning and at the end of 8weeks. Results: Statistically significant changes were observed in the intervention group relative to the control group, in lifestyle, depression, stress, control of anger, self-efficacy, negative emotions, physical and mental fatigue, sleep quality and verbal memory. Based on the RCI index and the NNT index, the program had a greater impact on lifestyle and depressive symptoms(NNT=8), followed by stress, physical fatigue and sleep(N=10). Discussion: Pythagorean Self-Awareness Technique has had significant benefits in both mental and physical health.
