Sleep quality and associated predictors among hospitalized patients with chronic heart failure
Summary:
Background: Sleep disturbances are common among patients with chronic heart failure (HF). Αwareness of the importance of sleep-related disorders in patients with heart failure is growing over the past years, as it can significantly affect patients’ daily activities and overall health.
Objective: To assess sleep quality in patients with chronic HF and identify predictors contributing to the onset of poor sleep quality.
Methods: The study was conducted on a sample of 152 patients with chronic HF. The data collection strategy included the completion of a demographic questionnaire, and the sleep quality of the participants was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).
Results: Poor sleep quality (global PSQI score ≥5) was observed in 82.9% of patients (n=126). The range of global PSQI score was 0-18 with a mean score of 8.22. A statistically significant relationship was found between global PSQI score and patients’ family status (p=0.044), perceived health status (p<0.001), NYHA classification (p<0.001), atrial fibrillation (p=0.045), use of mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (p=0.011) and diuretic use (p<0.01). Three predictors were identified using regression analyses with stepwise methods, and included NYHA stage, health status and atrial fibrillation.
Conclusions: A high prevalence of poor sleep quality was observed among patients with chronic HF. Further large-scale clinical trials are needed to assess the factors associated with sleep quality in HF patients for a more improved and effective management.
