Professional burnout: only an issue of occupational stress?
Summary:
The study attempted to identify the levels of teachers’ stress and burnout. In addition, it tried to specify the sources of teachers’ occupational stress and reveal the untold, both occupational and not, sources of teachers’ stress, for the first time on research. Particularly, the study attempted to seek possible correlations between the factors of teachers’ stress and their burnout, as well as the differences between primary and secondary teachers, as far as the stress levels, the burnout levels and the stressful factors are concerned. The sample consisted of 292 Primary (N = 109) and Secondary (N = 183) education teachers in Attica. The data was collected by using an online questionnaire, composed by three sections: the Sources of Emotional Tension (Stress) Questionnaire, the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-ES) and a demographic data scale. The results indicated that teachers experience medium levels of stress and burnout, with primary education teachers experiencing higher stress levels than the secondary education ones. Insufficient salary appeared to be the most significant source of occupational stress for teachers, while among the untold, both occupational and not, sources of teachers’ stress, the economic crisis which is affecting the country. Burnout seemed to have a statistical correlation with the factors of teachers’ stress, with emotional exhaustion being the only dimension that positively correlates with all the factors. In the end, there were statistically significant differences in the severity of certain stressful factors between primary and secondary teachers.
