How long does it take from the onset of symptoms to the diagnosis of a child's cancer?
Summary:
"How long does it take from the onset of symptoms to the diagnosis of a child's cancer?"
Introduction: The onset of symptoms is time-consuming in relation to the diagnosis of cancer in children.
Purpose: The investigation between the onset of symptoms and the diagnosis of the disease.
Methodology: The survey conducted is an epidemiological study, the population of which consisted of 105 patients with childhood cancer. A questionnaire with open and closed-ended questions was used to collect the data. Data analysis was performed with the Statistics Package for Social Sciences SPSS ver.24.
Results: In this study, we enrolled 105 children, 59 (56.2%) boys and 46 (43.8%) girls. The age of children at diagnosis ranges from 3 months old to 17 years old, the mean age was 6.9 years and the standard deviation was 4.72 years. The duration from the onset of symptoms to the diagnosis ranges from 0 days to 5.2 years, the average time was 128.42 days (4.3 months) and the S.D was ±499,94 days (1.3 years). It is clear that the time from diagnosis to treatment is different depending on the type of malignancy.

Conclusions: The time of onset of the symptoms to the diagnosis is marked by a significant deviation. It indicates that the delay of diagnosis is due to the difficulty to recognize the symptoms. Better education, vigilance and pediatricians’ awareness at childhood cancer will contribute to identify early symptoms and consequently to an early diagnosis.
