Summary:
Modern international developments in the field of education make it clear that new concepts emerge unexpectedly in the foreground drastically transforming the wider context and strongly emphasizing the need to adapt the educational institution and its consistency with the European context of increased pupil skills and higher qualifications of teachers. Based on the assumption that new concepts in the field of economy have been introduced, such as «competitiveness, indicators and benchmarks, measurable and achievable goals, efficiency, effectiveness, new qualifications framework, quality assurance, ongoing updating» the need for professional development of teachers, the expansion of their skills and the continuous certification of their new skills emerges urgently. The main focus of this study will be the critical reading attempt and the attempt to decode the term Professional Development of Teachers as well as to investigate the contribution of the school manager / leader to it. The ultimate goal is to clarify the necessity of professional development of teachers and to outline the contribution of the Management / Leadership in shaping the new identity the teacher needs to acquire, the identity of a mature, suspicious, flexible, effective, employable teacher, open to evaluation and control and, of course, constantly evolving. The key to this transformation is the manager / leader, as he is called with his vision, personal commitment, administrative and organizational skills, and a clear target to adopt the appropriate leadership model to transform the school unit into a living learning organization with emphasis in its educational and professional development.
