Functional and biochemical properties of riboflavin inactivated apheresis-platelets: advantages and disadvantages
Summary:
The challenge for optimal, efficient and safe use of transfused blood is a primary goal of the health system and has led to the improvement of current laboratory techniques and the development of new ones. This diploma thesis deals with the inactivation of blood derivatives and in particular of platelets(PLTs). The inactivation techniques already licensed and applied both in Greece and internationally, as well as techniques in progress, classified according to method principle (physical, chemical, biological-photodynamic) and their application to stable and unstable blood derivatives are presented.
The first two parts that are developed concern the “general” part of the paper, in a series as they are presented, initially with a brief description of each method as well as a presentation of the advantages and disadvantages thereof, in more detail in the MIRASOL technique which will also concern us as in the “specific” part of the thesis. To continue, reference is then made to the platelets and their derivatives as well as a more detailed description of the PLTs obtained by platelet-aggregation and then are inactivated. In the next two parts of the paper where the research part is now being developed, it begins with a description of the materials and methodologies used and finally ends up with the results that have been obtained and the conclusions that have yielded from these findings.
For the development of this thesis sources from the modern bibliography were used such as books, articles, presentations as well as scientific researches provided us with the necessary information to compile the findings of this research as well as to present new scientific data and studies that are in progress and also correlated with this paper.
