Stress management and health promotion at caregivers of persons with mobility problems
Summary:
Caregiving of patients with motor disability has been confirmed with adverse
repercussion on the caregivers' health. There is now apt evidence attesting stress
management techniques as effective for tackling physical, psychological and social
problems of caregivers of patients with disability. In this experimental two-armed study,
59 informal caregivers were assigned to attend a novel cognitive-based stress
management technique (Pythagorean Self-Awareness Intervention, PSAI), or usual
care. PSAI has been previously found to be beneficial in terms of cognitive, sleeprelated
and psychological health. The results of this study confirmed these findings, by
showing improvements in caregiver burden (effect size 1.6), sleep quality (d=0.84),
visual memory (d=0.81), self-efficacy (d=0.77), anxiety (d=0.51) and depression
(d=0.4). Future studies should expand these results, while health professional are
strongly advised to implement stress management for treating caregivers' stress.
