Comparative assessment of the Multi-SensorReanalysis v.2 ozone column time series with ground measurements for the case of Greece
Summary:
The ozone Multi-Sensor Reanalysis v.2 (MSR2) is a Total Ozone Column (TOC) data record constructed using all available, satellite and ground based, TOC data initially for the period 1970-2012 while it is continuously updated with new data. The aim was to develop a high spatial (1°×1°) and temporal (per 6 h) resolution time series which can be used for the detailed study of the TOC along with its trends.
In the present work, the primary objective was to study the degree of consistency between TOC estimates of the MSR2 and the corresponding available ground based measurements for the regions of Athens and Thessaloniki. Specifically, for Athens, as reference values were used the ground based daily measurements of TOC, measured by the Dobson spectrophotometer of the Ground Station of Atmospheric Observations, of the Department of Physics, of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens during the period 1989-2017. On the other hand, in Thessaloniki as reference values were used the ground based daily measurements of TOC, measured by the Brewer spectrophotometer of the Atmospheric Physics Laboratory, of the Department of Physics, of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki during the period 1982-2017.
The second objective of the thesis was to develop correlation functions of the MSR2 values with the corresponding ground based measurements for each studied area so that they could be used to create "simulated ground values" for the periods before the use of the corresponding instruments of each station. In this way, the existing time series of the ground based stations were extended back to 1970 by providing new information on the overall TOC status that prevailed in the country during the period when its ground based monitoring network had not yet been developed.
