Summary:
An accident of technological nature always has unpleasant consequences for a society, given the consequences it brings to the person himself and his environment - natural and man-made. However, when the echo of a disaster settles down and regularity is restored, even partially, it is given the opportunity to extract helpful and rewarding conclusions about improving the principles governing our lives.
Taking the content of the above paragraph as springboard, which is aptly summarized in the archaic "no bad without good", I chose the subject of my postgraduate thesis to be the naval tragedy of MS Norman Atlantic. It is essentially a catastrophic event that is classified as a major technological accident and whose investigation, only positive effects can have in a wide range of fields. Sectors such as security regulations, technical specifications, memoranda of actions and plans are being questioned, given the many questions that have arisen since the first moment, and even more because of the answers that until now remain blurred. This unclear context seeks to illuminate this work, as well as to highlight the obscure aspects of incident management through the development of its content in the following chapters.
More specifically, in the effort to achieve this goal, the reader will be given an opportunity, at early stage, to learn basic information about the ship as well as her location and way of operation. In this regard, useful meteorological data will be presented, helping to better understand the real conditions during the critical times. The next chapters will analyze the early moments of the drama and the rescue efforts, with emphasis on all those factors that led to the negative outcome of things. A particularly important part will be the subsequent presentation of the coordinative-operational work as it has been deployed since the first moment and after, both nationally and internationally. Special mention will be made of the socio-economic and political effects of the accident, as well as the extent of publicity, investigations and litigations that accompany it until today. The summary of the individual chapters will then lead to the final stage where valuable conclusions will be drawn, necessary to establish a sufficient proposal for a safer future in maritime transportation.
