Biological threats and biosecurity policy in the context of international development and globalization. The case study of European Union's biosecurity policy for countering biological threats
Summary:
After the end of the Cold War, the predominance of the “Economic Liberalism” as a “development tool” for world growth, the geographic expansion of the multinational companies and the increasing use of new technologies have led to “Globalization” and the creation of a “World Village”. Globalization, however, apart from being a process of convergence across states and societies especially on a financial level, generates new data and problematic on issues of international security. In particular, it constitutes the base for the appearance of biological threats and biological dangers that relate directly, among others, with climate change, global underdevelopment, world immigration, political instability and the regional armed conflicts. The states, in their effort to face the new global insecurity and more specifically the new biological threats and dangers, adopt new safety policies, also named as “Biosecurity Policies”.
