Mental health professional's experiences with cases of child sexual abuse
Summary:
Given the extent of child sexual abuse inside and outside the family in recent years, with more and more incidents coming to light, mental health professionals must be prepared both theoretically and practically in order to handle the peculiarities of the phenomenon. The present research is an attempt to investigate child sexual abuse and, more specifically, examine the experiences of mental health professionals who manage such incidents. Through the use of qualitative methodology, we investigate the knowledge and skills that experts need to have for the efficient handling of these cases. In particular, they answer questions about their need for education, support and interdisciplinary collaboration. Professionals reflect on the handling of cases of sexual violation, express their anxiety about the difficulties they encounter and their concern for the proper or not approach of incidents, while making recommendations for improvement changes.
