The Values of Primary School Teachers and their Attitudes concerning the Traits of Giftedness in Students
Summary:
During the last decades, a large number of studies effected have tried to highlight the potential relation of a person’s, and particularly of a teacher’s, values with the emergence of certain attitudes concerning the traits that he/she regards as traits of giftedness. The knowledge of their own personal value system is supposed to be an inherent element of the effective teachers. The main purpose of the current study was to examine whether and by which way the personal and educational values of teachers affect their attitudes concerning the traits of giftedness. The sample consisted from 180 primary school teachers that work in Athens. The teachers seemed to accept the largest part of personal values and to agree with some personal values-interests while there was a low to mediocre acceptance towards the educational values. They, almost, unanimously agreed that creativity is a basic trait of giftedness. The educational values together with a dimension of the personal values explain a limited percentage of variance of the teacher’s attitudes concerning the traits that they regard as characteristics of giftedness in students. An interesting finding is that the teachers who more accepted the educational values also seem to believe that high motivation and effectiveness in and out of classroom constitute traits of giftedness in students.
