Enhancement and Management of the Byzantine Castle of Didymoteicho
Summary:
Didymoteicho is located in Western Thrace, the area defined by the Evros river to the east and Nestos to the west, the Rhodope Mountains to the north and the Thracian Sea to the south. Thrace, during the Byzantine era, was at a focal point, between Europe and Asia, essentially forming the hinterland of Constantinople. The hill of Didimoteicho, the so-called Kale Hill, was fortified with a wall by Justinian I (527-565), replacing the adjacent Roman Plotinopolis. The purpose of this paper is to describe the Castle and the City that surrounded it, as well as the formulation of realistic proposals for its Enhancement and Management, taking into account the needs of the modern city and its inhabitants and the needs of the Monument itself.
