Tertiary lymphoid structures in non-neoplastic and neoplastic diseases
Summary:
The development of malignant neoplasms is a long-term multi-stage process in which cancer cells acquire genetic, epigenetic and morphological changes in a given tissue and then attack other tissues and organs through a complicated process called metastasis. Blood and lymphatic vessels (neovascularization) develop in the neoplasms, which are related to the metastatic potential and on the other hand they allow the white blood cells to extrude from the circulation into the tumor. All types of immune cells can penetrate the tumors. In most cancers, T-lymphocytes and macrophages are present both in the center of the tumor (CT) and the invasive front (IM), while other types of immune cells are more abundant in IM than in CT. All these elements are the microenvironment of the tumor. The composition, cellular distribution, functionality and organization of the tumor microenvironment depend on the type and stage of the tumor as well as on the host.
