Longitudinal analysis of the last 24 hour dietary intake and somatometric characteristics in a sample of 250 adults
Summary:
Aim: The purpose of this dissertation is to evaluate the changes of food consumption as well as to compare the results using different statistical modelling methods after a year. A major scope was the investigation of the factors influencing the changes.
Material-Methods: The data used was based on the project “HYDRIA. Programme and targeted action on the diet and health of the Greek population: development and implementation of methodology and documentation”. It was coordinated by the Hellenic Health Foundation (HHF) in collaboration with the Hellenic Center for Disease Control & Prevention (HCDCP) of the Hellenic Ministry Of Health. Additionally, the data was based on a second research programme, which was funded by the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA). Dietary intake assessment was carried out with 24h recalls. The food groups that had the most remarkable changes over the year were identified through the use of unadjusted descriptive analyses. Moreover, statistical modelling methods were implemented to identify the factors which correlated with dietary changes.
Results-Conclusions: A reduction in food consumption in our second recording was noticed in most food groups. Factors which were found to be correlated in dietary changes were gender, age, level of education, occupation, body mass index, smoking habits, personal health assessment and comorbidity. Finally, the statistical modelling methods which were implemented were evaluated in terms of their adequacy for the given data. The methods which take into consideration the repeated measurements of each subject were those that answered the innumerable questions and gave a clear picture of the changes in consumption.
