Responding to the accidents and to the hygiene habits in Larisa΄s prisons
Summary:
Purpose
The present study initially attempts to capture the treatment from the accidents by the prisoners in the impoverished prison environment, up to the arrival of the health care professionals. Also, the study aims to investigate the level and the habits of the prisoners’ personal hygiene. Finally, it highlights the necessity for training the prisoners in the First Aid and Hygiene, as this is an educational priority for any other citizen.

Materials and Methodology
Τhis is a cross-sectional study on a population of 113 prisoners; These are Second Chance School students, out of a total of around 600 prisoners in Larissa. The data come from the specially formulated anonymous questionnaire which was completed by all the prisoners, from the prison’s clinic and from the local EKAB data.

Conclusions
The parameters that were investigated are the type of acute occurrence, the frequency, the venue, the primary response by the detainees themselves and the duration of the transfer. It has been found that prisoners, while living in special detention conditions, are persistently engaging in unhealthy attitudes and are faced several times with serious health incidents. They need to be aware or to be trained in providing basic First Aid, as well as to improve their level of self-care. The reasons are, psychological, humanitarian, social and, above all, medical.
