Anxiety and depression in caregivers of patients with colorectal cancer
Summary:
Introduction: The quality of life of a colorectal cancer patient and his family members is greatly affected by the diagnosis of the disease. Anxiety and depression levels appear to be higher in end-stage patients. Similarity in levels of concern and concern among patients and their family members suggests that there are common elements that affect the concerns and concerns of the two groups.
Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the levels of depression and anxiety in caregivers of patients with colorectal cancer. The results of this study will lead to the production of more data, newer specialized knowledge, while more aspects of the psychology of the cancer patient were analyzed.
Methodology: This is a prospective observational study. The design includes the distribution of questionnaires to caregivers of patients with colorectal cancer from December 2017 to January 2018. The Greek version of the HADS Hospital Depression and Depression Hospital was used as the main research tool for the study's needs, while at the same time the demographics of each patient were recorded.
Results: The study sample consisted of 100 caregivers aged 55.8 ± 13.7 years with a minimum of 21 and a maximum of 75 years. Of these, 72 (72%) carers were women and 28 (28%) men. With regard to affinity with patients, 61 (61%) carers were spouses, 22 (22%) children, 7 (7%) parents, 5 (5%) friends and grandchildren. Regarding smoking, 36% of respondents smoke and 64% do not smoke, while 93% of caregivers do not consume alcohol. Regarding anxiety levels, 46 (46%) caregivers had normal levels of anxiety, 38 (38%) abnormal anxiety levels and 16 (16%) abnormal pathological stress levels. Regarding depression levels of caregivers, 55 (55%) caregivers had normal levels of depression, 26 (26%) abnormal depression levels and 19 (19%) borderline abnormal levels of depression. Significantly more caregivers living in a residential area had normal stress levels (p <0.05), significantly more spouses of caregivers had normal levels of anxiety (p <0.05) than the others. Older caregivers had significantly higher levels of depression (p <0.05), and significantly more caregivers who never used alcohol had normal levels of depression (p <0.05) than the others.
Conclusions: The treatment group should take into consideration the possibility of anxiety and depression in caregivers of patients with colorectal cancer. It is advisable to involve psychiatrists and psychologists in the treatment group according to the needs of the caregiver. It is recommended that medical and nursing staff be trained in the identification of symptoms and / or signs of anxiety and depression in patients. Finally caregivers should be encouraged to participate in community support providers that will enable them to share and cope with the problems they face.
