Provided health services on a small island of Cyclades Evaluation of the services by the permanent residents of the area
Summary:
Background
Folegandros belongs to the small islands of Cyclades and is one of the most popular summer destinations. The aim of this study is the evaluation of health care services in Folegandros by the permanent citizens of the island.
Methods
A structured questionnaire was created and sent through electronic media to a random sample of 150 out of 600 permanent residents of the island.
Results
Almost ¾ of the participants state low trust to public health services. 65% of the participants are satisfied by medical staff’s skills, but ¾ of them declare unsatisfied by the available medical equipment. The most important issues arising from the survey are poor infrastructure, lack of specialists, limited local laboratory facilities, absence of telemedicine and difficulties in patient transport.
Conclusions
The evaluation of each island’s healthcare needs is pivotal for successful health care planning and provision. The efficient utilization of existing infrastructure, the enforcement of existing incentives policies and the upgrading of transport facilities will improve the accessibility of residents to quality health care services.
