Preparedness Level on CBRN Incedents of Athens General Children's Hospitals "AGIA SOPHIA" and "PANAGIOTIS & AGLAIA KYRIAKOU"
Summary:
Introduction: During last decades, CBRN disasters occur more frequently than before. Countries have developed effective procedures and equipment for adult casualties, but children still remain a vulnerable population group. Objective: This study aims to investigate preparedness level on CBRN incidents of two major Children’s Hospitals in Athens. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed to address CBRN preparedness and training level of ED and ICU personnel, through a questionnaire. Results: Response rate was 76%. Self-estimated response efficacy was 2.0/5. Willingness to respond was 70% (unconditional) and 15% (conditional). CBRN knowledge on special medications was 91%, on protective equipment was 1.7/5. Training on HEPA masks, decontamination procedures, safe storage and performance on CBRN-triage was limited. Performing medical procedures with CBRN equipment was identified as difficult. Conclusion: Preparedness was found limited as in many European children hospitals. CBRN training, exercises and planning should be included in hospital’s regular plan.
