Theoretical and practical knowledge of nurses in endotracheal suctioning
Summary:
Introduction: Endotracheal suctioning is one of the most important nursing procedures in ICU. Nurses must have sufficient knowledge of how to perform suctioning following current guidelines.
Objective : To investigate the level of the theoretical and practice knowledge of ICU nurses, , on the process of endotracheal suctioning.
Materials and Methods: This is a prospective, survey using a 36- item questionnaire, based on the AARC guidelines, as well as a 31- item checklist which were used as observation of the same nurses in practice. The survey was conducted in ICUs of two Attica hospitals.
Results: Nurses aged 31-40 years did not use a protective apron (p-value 0.015). Regarding gender, women nurses placed the patient in a comfortable position before the suction process compared with men nurses (p-value=0.0019). In addition, nursing staff did not use safety glasses (p-value 0.001). Finally, nurses with long experience in ICU informed the patient on the procedure to be followed (p-value 0.050).
Conclusion: This study showed that most of the nurses had good theoretical level of knowledge about endotracheal suctioning while practice knowledge level was low. These findings may be due to nurses' workload.
