Social gender identity and educational - professional choices in adolescence. A study in Greece of financial crisis in students of General Lyceums in Piraeus
Summary:
The present study investigates the relationship between the social identity of gender and
the way it is structured as a male or a female identity according to social standards or
stereotypes and the educational and professional choices in adolescence. The study also
examines the way in which adolescents plan their academic and professional future, and
whether this differs in relation to the gender. The role of gender and the formation of beliefs
about courses and occupations were also studied, searching whether these were characterized
as "male", "female" or "neither male nor female". Finally the study investigates the terms of
"successful man" and "successful woman" on the adolescents’ beliefs about the definition of
success and whether it is differentiated by gender. The final sample consisted of 217 pupils of
the first and second grade of four General High Schools from the region of Pireaus, Attica.
The participants completed an adapted version of the questionnaire: "Adolescence and Life
Choices: Questionnaire for Boys and Girls of Secondary Education" by Deligianni-Kouimtzi
B. - Sakka D. - Psalti A. The results showed that students of both genders mainly reproduce
stereotypical perceptions of the past regarding whether a course or a profession is best suited
to men or to women. With regard to the characteristics that their future profession would like
to have, students emphasize mostly on the salary level, the leisure time, the security, and the
developmental possibilities. It has also been found that they reproduce stereotype beliefs
about the meaning of the term "success" for men and "success" for women. It is quite
interesting however, that there is a lack of statistically significant differences between boys
and girls in their school performance and in professional and educational beliefs related to the
gender variable.
