Factors related to the development of depressive symptoms in military personnel during the period of the financial crisis in Greece
Summary:
Depression is a particularly common mental disorder among the army population. The purpose of this particular research is to investigate whether, in a financial crisis period, the demographic and the socio-ecomonic factors are related to the development of depressive symptoms in the Army personnel and the establishment of a model of anticipated factors.
The research is a retrospective analysis of quantitative data, which were collected in the Outpatient Department of the Psychiatric Clinic of the 414 Military Special Diseases Hospital, in a period of financial crisis (2014-2015) after the administration of two questionnaires, one that is concerned with socio-demographic data and the Critical Indices Scanning Questionnaire (CISQ-1), which detects symptoms of mental dysfunction, self-destructive indices, substance dependency indices and stressful life events indicators.
The statistical analysis revealed that officers - permanent non-commissioned officers (as compared to professional and long-term volunteers), those who reside with the parental family (compared to those who live alone or with their own family) those who have a monthly income of less than 500 euros (compared with incomes above 500 euros) and those reporting a traumatic event in childhood have increased values on the scale of depressive symptoms.
The results show that the absence of a supportive framework, and in particular the lack of colleagues willing to help with personal problems, the psychiatric history, the rank of the staff (possession of a highrank indicates more responsibilities in work and more stressful working conditions) and the existence of financial loose ends may contribute to the prediction of the occurrence of depressive symptoms.
