Design, development and use of a WebQuest for teaching the subject of Literature in Junior High School in a collaborative learning environment
Summary:
In this day and age, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have been integrated into the educational systems of all developed countries, considering that their integration has gone through three major phases since 1970. In the modern digital age, the most suitable model for the use of ICT in the educational process is the integrated or holistic approach. At the same time, in the age of information, the Internet has transfused new features to the educational reality by offering unlimited possibilities for access to information and knowledge and by shifting emphasis to their proper use and exploitation. Therefore, of utmost importance are the issues of educational design and proper use of ICT, in the context of research learning and cooperative, learner-centered and authentic learning activities, which provide motivation for learning and engage the learner in the learning process.
This research attempts to investigate whether the holistic use of ICT as a tool for constructing knowledge by learners themselves in a collaborative learning environment can increase motivation and improve collaboration, learning outcomes, and students’ attitudes towards the Literature course compared to the use of ICT as an assisting tool for the teacher. To this end, a quasi-experimental survey was carried out among 2nd grade students of a model junior high school in Athens. At the same time, for the purposes of this intervention, a Webquest was designed and applied in the case of the experimental group in a technology mediated environment for the Literature course in the second grade junior high school. The Webquest was evaluated by students and teachers in terms of content, structure and presentation, technical and pedagogical adequacy, usability and appropriateness for the target group.
The results of the survey indicated that the students who were taught through the method of Webquest had increased motivation, collaborated better and developed a more positive attitude towards the specific lesson of Literature. Regarding the learning outcomes, no particular differences between the two groups were observed. Finally, the Webquest has been positively evaluated by students and teachers in all aspects.
