The life in multicultural school classroom: Comparative study between foreign and native students
Summary:
This comparative study explores life in the multicultural classroom between native and foreign students. In particular, it examines the way in which native and foreign students perceive the classroom climate and the correlations of its characteristics. It also compares the self-esteem of foreign and native students and how it is influenced by the classroom climate. The survey sample is comprised of 222 students of the fifth and sixth grade, 112 of whom are Greeks and 110 are foreigners. The data collection was done using a self-report questionnaire to students, consisting of two scales: a) Johnson & Johnson's " Classroom Life Measure " and b) Rosenberg's "Self-Esteem Scale ". The results showed that the classroom climate is perceived in a similar way by native and foreign students. Specifically, apart from the factor of student academic support, differentiations were found in all the other factors of the Classroom Life Measure among native-foreign students. However, the variations were relatively small, with the exception of fair evaluation and competitive learning. In terms of self-esteem it was found that natives have a higher general and positive self-esteem than foreigners students. Correlations have shown statistically significant positive correla-tions between all the factors of the classroom climate, apart from the factors of al-ienation, conflict, individual and competitive learning, which mainly have negative correlations. Finally, providing a positive and supportive environment for students seemed to contribute to increasing their self-esteem.
