Which factors have contributed in the reappearance of Measles in Europe the past decade? Why has it reemerge in Greece? Is it because of socioeconomic factors or the anti-vaccination movement?
Summary:
Measles is an infectious disease that co exists with the human kind for almost 10.000 years. As for many other diseases, in the recent years vaccines have been developed also for measles in order to protect personal and public health through the immunization of the public. Although they are common ground for the total of the European Union and have been for decades now part of the National Immunization Programme the disease reemerges regularly and recently more frequent than expected.
That occurs mainly because of the decrease in vaccination coverage in the public, the cultural diversity of subgroups, the increased number of travelers and travels to countries where measles is endemic, the immense number of migrants that has moved towards the European Union the past 5 years and the formation and strengthening of the Antivaccination or Vaccine Hesitancy Movement, that has decreased the effect of ‘herd immunity’.
