Summary:
In this diploma thesis, the first chapter presented the time of the financial crisis that started with the collapse of the mortgage market in the USA in the years 2008-2009, where it then evolved into a global financial crisis. Then presented the consequences of the financial crisis in Europe through the non-performing loans ratio. In the second chapter we analyzed the determinants of the non performing loans through various studies carried out for Greece and for the rest of Europe. The determinants factors are divided into two macroeconomic groups (GDP, unemployment rate, inflation ...) and banking (ROA, ROE ...). The third chapter outlined some of the non-performing loan consolidation policies and strategies proposed by regulatory and supervisory authorities. Finally, were studied the characteristics of non-performing loans in European North and South and then a comparison was made between them. Common factors for the two groups were found to be the ratio ROA , the total assets and the unemployment ratio, while the differences between the two groups of countries were mainly found in the ROE ration and in the ratio of banking credit to bank deposits
