Court cases of female defendants in the first hexad of Tacitus' Annals
Summary:
The thesis examines a series of court cases involving female defendants, as recorded in the first six books of Tacitus’ Annals. In the first chapter I explore these trials on the basis of particular themes: the number of court cases per book and per year, the charges in each individual case, the outcome of trials, the nature of the imposed punishments and the family origin of the female defendants. The trials of Aemilia Lepida (Tac. Ann. III.22-3), Albucilla (Tac. Ann. VI.47.2-48) and the anonymous mother of Sextus Papinius (Tac. Ann. VI.49) are set at the core of the second chapter. The chapter begins with a detailed comparison between the accusations and the punishments in these trials, in order to illustrate the strong similarities between them. The focus moves next on Tiberius’ actions and overall behavior during these trials. Judging on the basis of the princeps’ attitude towards each of the women under trial, the various cases are grouped into categories. Furthermore, Tacitus’ approach of female defendants is another topic under study. My principal concern here is to shed light on the considerable complexity characterizing most of these cases (with the discussion of Albucilla as starting point and reference case study). I also intend to confirm the view that the historiographer does not consider women as ethical role models. In the last part of chapter two, I intend to find characteristic features and motifs of drama in Tacitus’ narration and interpret their function. The third chapter is devoted exclusively to the cases of Appuleia Varilla (Tac. Ann. II.50), Claudia Pulchra (Tac. Ann. IV.52) and Agrippina the Elder (Tac. Ann. V.3-5,VI.25). The chapter begins with a close, stage-by-stage examination of the two cases. In the main part of the chapter I discuss Tiberius’ and Livia’s attitude towards, and Tacitus’ approach of, these women, and I assess each case on the basis of the same set criteria employed for the categorization of the women under trial in chapter two. In the closing section of the third chapter, I attempt to detect characteristic features and motifs of drama in the narrative of the incidence between Tiberius and Agrippina the Elder, which is presented by Tacitus as a consequence of the court case of Claudia Pulchra. In the fourth chapter, I look at the trials of Plancina (Tac. Ann. III.15,17-18, VI.26.3), Sosia Galla (Tac. Ann. IV.19-20) and Paxaea (Tac. Ann. VI.29). In the last sub-chapter I try to detect, comment and explain features and motifs of drama in Tacitus’ narrative of the case of Plancina.
