Brain volumetry of gray and white matter: The effects of aging in healthy participants
Summary:
There is consistent evidence that cognitive functions decline with age in a non-linear way. Brain structures should also follow a similar trajectory. So, the purpose of this research is to understand the effects of aging in both gray and white matter. The understanding of brain aging could contribute to an early diagnose of neuro-degenerative diseases such as AD, schizophrenia etc. This is possible because some brain structures like hippocampus and amygdala could be used as markers of such diseases.
In this research we examined both linear and non-linear volume changes with age of gray and white matter. There were some structures that declined in a linear fashion and others that presented a polynomial dependence (some of second and others of third order). Gray matters decline with age is something we expected because cognitive functions decline with age as well. Concerning white matter, there were areas that decreased with age and others that increased.
Also, it has been observed that there is a different effect of aging between males and females. Men are known to have larger brain structures (in total volume) than females, but comparing to the total intracranial volume they present no difference. In this research a significant different aging was presented between brain structures of males and females.
