Synthesis and characterization of complex macromolecular architectures. Self-assembly and conductivity study in solid state
Summary:
In this dissertation, styrene-ethylene oxide and styrene-methyl methacrylate polymers with complex macromolecular architecture were synthesized. The synthesis of the polymers was carried out by anionic polymerization and nitroxide mediated polymerization. Additionally, linear polystyrene (single-ion) was synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer polymerization. This was the first step for the further incorporation of modified styrene into complex macromolecular architectures and their use as polymer electrolyte membranes, into lithium-ion batteries.
The copolymers were characterized by size exclusion chromatography (GPC), nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Some of these were mixed with the lithium salt and subjected to rheology and conductivity measurements via dielectric spectroscopy. The dispersion homogeneity of polymethyl methacrylate star within the polyethylene oxide matrix was examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
