Experiences of Homosexual Women In Greece
Summary:
The present study is an effort to examine the way homosexual women in Greece perceive their way of living. The purpose is to get acquainted with the way they experience diversity in erotic preference and to discuss the impact on their lives. The responses derived from 13 semi-structured interviews are systematically analyzed on the basis of the principles of the Thematic Analysis. Interest is focused on the age of awareness of the homosexual preference, the relationships within the family, within the social circle, the professional world and in society in general. Also, possible psychological burdens are discussed, as well as the probability of marginalisation due to the sexual preference. The research shows that age of awareness may have an impact on the way of living and coping. It also appears that in the 35-50 age group the respondents have created an identity that embraces their preference, without creating any particular issues. Partial disclosure of the sexual identity is the most popular way of adapting in order not to create any conflicts within the family, professional and social environment. The study gives an overview of the subjective perception of the lives of homosexual women that could be a beginning in order to better address the difficulties, potential marginalisation or emotional complications that might occur.
