Ethnic Identity, School Performance and Psychological Well-being of Immigrant adolescent: A Longitudial Research
Summary:
The goal of the present study was to investigate the relation between ethnic identity and psychological well-being (self-esteem) and school performance in immigrant adolescent as well as to investigate the potential role of the immigrant generation on the aforementioned relationship at the cross-sectional and longitudinal level. The sample consisted of 127 immigrant adolescent students (40,6% boys) from Albania (69%), from former Soviet Union (33%) and from other countries, who took part in the survey that took place in two waves, while they attended the first class of the high school and while they attended the third class of the high school, two years later. Ethnic identity was assessed with the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (ΜΕΙΜ· Phinney, 1992), self-esteem with the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (1965) and school performance were based on a composite of grade point average (GPA). According to the results, none of the factors of the ethnic identity did not seem to predict self-esteem and school
performance of immigrant adolescents at the cross-sectional level, but at the longitudial level, the factor of ethnic identity-sense of belonging predicted negatively the school performance. The generation of immigration and gender predict school performance, but not by interacting with ethnic identity. It is being discussed the importance of the discrimination, of the confirmation of stereotypes, of the role of the beliefs of an ethno-cultural group, as well as the importance of the ethnic identity for each individual.
