Investigation of patient preoperative anxiety
Summary:
Introduction: Preoperative anxiety is defined as an unpleasant state of anxiety or tension that is secondary to a patient who is worried about a disease, hospitalization, anesthesia and surgery or the unknown. Most patients experience anxiety while waiting for surgery.
Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate preoperative anxiety and the factors that affect it in patients to undergo scheduled surgery at the Surgery Department of the Amalia Fleming General Hospital.
Methodology: A qualitative research approach based on the principles of Content Analysis was used. Structured interviews were used to collect data, from which fictional material was collected. Then interviews and data analysis were recorded. At Data analysis we conducted comparing, interpreting and comprehending, comparing and verifying of the collected data. At the next step we conducted encoding of the data. The encoding was based on the words or phrases of the participants, and on the basis of them, the categories reflecting the purpose of the study were formed.
Results: Patients undergoing surgery develop significant levels of pre-operative anxiety. Patients experiencing pre-operative anxiety focus on the following areas: targeted information, communication, emotional support, fear of death, social concerns, inadequate information about the health system and past experience. Before surgery, patients develop concerns that create needs. Failure to meet these needs leads to a problem, which usually corresponds to the development of fear of death.
Conclusions: The best solution of the problem seems to be the personalized approach that minimizes concerns, reduces patients' needs, and ultimately reduces or eliminates the main problem of fear of death. More research should be conducted to investigate preoperative anxiety and the factors that affect it in patients who are going to undergo scheduled surgery.
