Teachers' perceptions for Roma and Roma students how they can change through professional development
Summary:
The Roma are a European minority following a particular philosophy, tradition and nomadic way of life. As a result, Roma remain vulnerable to racism and prejudice. In Greek, international and European area, discrimination against Roma and reproduction of stereotypes and prejudices is a common phenomenon associated with their “established” social identity. Education is an important factor, in the broader context of intercultural education, with integration programs for Roma children during the educational process. Teachers are institutional factor of education policy, as directly involved. They need to become more effective in cultivating the possibility of unlock from stereotypes and prejudices that determine their pedagogical and educational attitude.
The purpose of the current study is to enlighten whether the professional development of teachers actually alters their time-structured perceptions, to what extend and if it is effective in the end.
For research purposes, qualitative research was considered as a suitable methodological approach by using an interview guide. In particular, interviews were conducted with 5 primary school teachers serving in a primary school in the area of Gerakas, the Director of the specific school unit, 2 Specialists and the School Advisor. The Roma students’ attendance rate in the particular school is 15%. Subsequently, the interviews were transcribed and typed on a computer in order to process and draw useful conclusions. The survey was conducted in February and March 2018 in a primary school in the area of Gerakas.
According to the research, teachers are taught in mixed classes. Their aim is to make all students educationally effective by addressing educational problems in the school environment. Teachers considered as necessary way to be trained in intercultural education, linking theory and practice. There are implementation difficulties and linguistic, cultural and behavioral obstacles, but regular attendance can bring benefits to the integration of children. However, it is essential the Ministry to constantly inform and consult with institutionalized programs the teachers.

Teachers consider that there may be educational development for Roma pupils. The key factor, in order to effectively integrate in school environment, is the proper behavior and treatment by the manager, school staff and other students. Moreover, “good practices” could be adopted to facilitate teachers’ educational work and smooth out any stereotypes.
