Hegemonic stability theory on a regional level: the case of Eurasian Economic Union
Summary:
The purpose of this paper is to examine to which extent Russia could possibly take a hegemonic role in establishing and stabilizing a liberal economic system on the regional level of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). Using the conceptual framework of hegemonic stability theory in order to further examine this assumption, we see that due to the current state of the Russian economy and governance, there is little chance that Russia could become the key asset in the procedure of establishing a liberal economic system. However, by creating the conditions needed and taking the initiatives indicated by the hegemonic stability approach, Russia could potentially act as hegemonic power, ready to establish a stable liberal economic system in the EAEU.
