Pluriligualism of children descending from immigrants in Greece: what impacts on identity development and what representations on the world and on languages?
Summary:
The research introduced in this paper finds its founding principles within the sociolinguistic context in contemporary Greece. Concerned by the rise of immigration that has been occurring since the end of the 20th century, we question ourselves on the consequences of the integration of the foreign population in the host country. More specifically, we will focus on the identity stakes induced by this integration and concentrate our study on the identity development and plurilingualism of the children descended from immigrants. The research, conducted in an elementary school of downtown Athens, is built around one principal thematic: the representations of the children on languages, which will be analyzed thanks to a tool used in the field of Didactic of Languages called “language portrayal”. The aim of our work is to understand the context of the language use for these children. We will study their representations on languages in general but also on their language(s) and culture(s) of origin. This approach will help us better understand the complexity of the identity development for these children. The information given by our population will enable to determine if this plurilingualism and this cultural richness, born to the heritage of the migrant families, favor the development of a plurilingual and intercultural consciousness, guarantying an opening on the world and on others.
