SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF STATISTICAL COPOLYMERS OF N-VINYL PYRROLIDONE VIA REVERSIBLE ADDITION-FRAGMENTATION CHAIN TRANSFER (RAFT)
Summary:
The subject of this thesis is the synthesis and characterization of the statistical copolymers P(HMA-co-NVP) and P(SMA-co-NVP), where HMA, NVP and SMA are hexyl methacrylate, N-vinyl pyrrolidone ans steraryl methacrylate respectively. The copolymer where prepared via RAFT, by using [(O-Ethylxanthyl)methyl]benzene and [1-(O-Ethylxanthyl)ethyl]benzene as CTA’s. All polymerizations were conducted using high-vacuum and glassblowing techniques.
The molecular weight of the copolymers and the molecular weight distribution were determined by size exclusion chromatography (SEC), while the composition of the copolymers was determined by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.
The reactivity ratios were estimated with the computer program COPOINT and with conventional graphical methods. Structural parameters of the copolymers were obtained by calculating the dyad, triad monomer sequence fractions and the mean sequence length.
The glass-transition (Tg), melting (Tm) and crystallization temperatures of the copolymers were measured by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC).
All the copolymers synthesized in this thesis are biocompatible and biodegradable and they could be used in biorelated applications.
