Anxiety and attitudes towards Mathematics and beliefs about the teaching of Mathematics of Pre-service teachers of Athens
Summary:
The aim of this paper is to investigate the attitudes, beliefs and levels of anxiety of the preservice teachers in Greece. In particular, a survey was conducted in a sample of students of the Primary Education Department of Athens and focuses on their attitudes towards mathematics, their beliefs about teaching them, as well as the levels of anxiety that are caused by this particular subject and its teaching.
In order to conduct the survey, a questionnaire was used, which included students’ demographics, as well as some scales concerning attitudes, beliefs and levels of anxiety about mathematics and the relationship between them. After the formulation of the investigational hypotheses, it was examined the relation between attitudes, beliefs and anxiety, as well as the connection with some elements of the students, such as gender, educational level of the parents, their choice of school direction and their rating in the subject of Mathematics. In order to check the research hypotheses, information was collected from a representative sample of 231 preservice teachers.
The findings showed that there is a strong correlation between the negative attitudes towards mathematics and the anxiety about them. On the other hand, the positive attitude towards mathematics is positively connected with the beliefs of the preservice teachers about the teaching of mathematics and negatively with the anxiety about mathematics. According to individual students’ data, it was found that gender is positively related to anxiety, with women having higher levels of anxiety. Moreover, the subjects in which students were examined and through them they were introduced to the Primary Education Department are an important factor that causes anxiety about mathematics, since according to the results, students attending subjects specialized in sciences have significantly more positive attitudes towards mathematics and less anxiety than the students specialized in humanities subjects.
