Teaching modern Greek to refugee children: organization, teaching strategies and approaches
Summary:
This research focuses on the teaching of Modern Greek language to refugee children in Greece. It is a qualitative research whose main goal is the understanding and the description of the teaching process of modern Greek within the context of formal and non-formal education. The research took place in June and July 2018. Our sample consists of ten teachers of primary and secondary education who teach Greek as a second language in receiving classes in public primary and secondary schools and in NGOs. We used semi-structured interviews in order to collect our data. The main questions are about the organization of classes, the needs and difficulties of refugee students and the teaching strategies that are applied by the teachers. We chose the thematic analysis to analyze the collected data. The results have shown deficiency in the central organization of the Ministry of Education, whereas the heterogeneity of refugee children and their special needs were emerged. The teaching strategies used by the teachers of our sample seemed to answer the needs of refugee children; nevertheless we made some proposition for the enrichment of these strategies through a different teaching approach.
