Educators’ views on the causes of school failure of ethnoculturally “other” students and ways to deal with the problem
Summary:
In recent years, due to sociopolitical developments in neighbouring countries and all around the world, Greece has been receiving more and more migrant workers and refugees and it has gradually become a multicultural society. This has greatly affected not only society but also education. The composition of the school population has changed and so have educational needs. Despite the measures taken by the Greek government, ethnoculturally “other” students continue to form a part of the school population with “special” educational needs who often face school failure.
In this particular thesis, we examine the sources of school failure of etnhoculturally “other” students and ways to cope with this problem taking into account educators’ views on the matter. Qualitative research has been used for this as well as semi-structured interviews. The sample consisted of 21 teachers working in two Greek state primary schools in the centre of Athens with a majority of students of different ethnocultural backgrounds.
According to the findings of the survey, among the main causes of school failure of ethnoculturally “other” students are: language, students’ age at the time they join a class, class placement, the reasons their parents chose to emigrate, family background, and socioeconomic situation of the parents, major cultural differences among the school population, our educational system and the structure of our schools and last but not least, the teachers themselves.
The proposed ways to cope with school failure of ethnoculturally “other” students necessitate a sound educational policy which means reforming our educational system, having highly knowledgeable educators, more educators, new learning methods, appropriate teaching material as well as the contribution of other scientific staff in an advisory role.
